Description

From the first screech of his electric guitar upsetting musicians at a folk festival to his writing and paintings, Bob Dylan has risen to become a seminal force in American popular culture. It’s when he’s writing about music that Konemann really sings, with passages on gigs and club nights that capture the sticky, heady intensity of night life with writing that thrums off the page.

just like this voyeuristic sense of the novel, the plot and character, unfortunately, also fall into this.Apart from the fact that this one involved a lot less footnoting, the general process was quite similar. A trailblazing, conversation-starting history of women’s health—from the earliest medical ideas about women’s illnesses to hormones and autoimmune diseases—brought together in a fascinating sweeping.

It was an easy read, I got through it quickly, if it sounds like your kind of thing, go ahead; if not it’s not one I’ll recommend. As Noah spends more of his time with them, getting drunk and high, neglecting his mental health and physical wellbeing, he finds himself alienating the people in his life. When the crowd turns violent, Noah runs into the street and meets Dylan, the charming local barman he's never had the courage to approach. He published his debut non-fiction title The Appendix: Transmasculine Joy in a Transphobic Culture as part of 404 Inkling’s series, and his debut novel publishes in Spring 2022.His infatuation with Dylan is complicated by the fact that Dylan is ‘straight’ and by his living arrangements: Dylan lives with Fraser, an incredibly mercurial man who doesn’t take kindly to Noah ‘inserting’ himself into their lives. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. There’s a basement flat that appears very briefly which is almost an exact copy of one I lived in several years ago. While music is an undeniable component in Noah’s narrative, Smiling Politely serve a rather underwhelming function in the story. Needed more fleshing out, there was brilliant build up in the first half, even up until the last third or so of the book.
