This blog aims to document a few of these fine (and fun) pastimes before they, and the pubs where they are still played, finally disappear forever. Hungarian Locomotive Tin Toy 'Csengos Mozdony', Battery Operated 'Bell Ringer' Train, Vintage Collectible Tin Toys Made by 'E. I vaguely remember that some Mines, including Devil amongst the Tailors had small Jumping Crackers inside them - I bet that was fun for the audience!

In the rare example where a two-life turn produces two draws, house rules apply but it is suggested that the next turn simply carries on in the standard two-life fashion. For much of the information on this blog I am indebted to the work of Arthur Taylor, author of Played At The Pub, the definitive work on the British pub game tradition. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg. Skittles or Nine Pins as played on an alley is still one of the most popular pub games and is the ancestor of a number of games including ten-pin bowling. The 18 th-century game is different from today’s version that is still around in some pubs in Britain. A very fine old table can be played at the Stag Inn, Kimberley in Nottinghamshire, which I hope to photograph (and play) at some point in the near future. Its design includes an elaborate gallery of gilded metalwork, showcasing a row of five jesters perched atop elegantly turned posts, where the game's red and black wooden pins are arranged.

Just like alley skittles itself, different miniaturised versions of the game are particular to certain regions of Britain - Hood skittles is popular in and around Northamptonshire whereas Daddlums has only ever been found in Kent. To prepare each nine miniature pins are positioned on a small platform within the square game board. silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. The game's base, a simple yet elegant mahogany frame, stands on legs that are both turned and tapered, culminating in ball-turned feet. Please note transfer and storage charges will apply to any lots not collected after 14 calendar days from the auction date. It's a full size 'league standard' table with slim but heavy-weight Lignum Vitae pins and what looks to be the same dense and durable wood for the swinging ball. A game of great skill for serious pub competition or just good old fashioned fun for children and adults. I mention this because I find it interesting how in the early stages of importing it was simply a case of copying English style fireworks. Joseph Strutt describes the game in his book “Sports and Pastimes of the English people”, published in 1801 (four year prior to the riot), and gives its name as “Devil among the tailors”. Joseph Strutt in his 'Sports and Games of the People of England' describes a very simple version of this played on a circular board without any rooms.

He handcut all the mortice tenon joints and dovetails and the end results are outstanding examples of craftsmanship. But the most popular and well known table-top version of Skittles pictured above, was invented sometime in the 18th century. Beautifully made by Benchmark and designed by aberrant architecture, these playful tables were a highlight of the exhibition. For all other auctions: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. It seemed that this item was very popular among each of the different British firework manufacturers. The ball is equally tricky to fabricate, requiring a dense and heavy wood to be truly effective without being too large. Products shown, tagged or featured on YouTube by creators are sold by merchants and are subject to merchant's terms and conditions. I've drilled out a few Crib Boards in my time, and without exception it's tedious work, particularly with an electric hand drill. Two pub tables in American cherry and maple and American walnut and ash were created for the Wallpaper* Handmade Exhibition at Milan Design Week 2012.
