There are also love affairs, devotion to family, marriage celebrations, religious ceremonies, and court deliberations. He lives in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, with his wife Barbara, the former Labour Member of Parliament for Stevenage. Ragna has been raised with leadership skills, her noble father letting her sit as justice in the village courts over which he reigned.

King Ethelred, shown many years into his reign, does not have the level of control over England that later kings would have.My third novel by Follett offered up everything I've come to expect from the author; an excellent story full of clumsy writing, bite-sized chapters peppered with cheesy dialogue, and a wonderful setting that's filled to bursting with pantomime villains, sweeter-than-saccharine heroes, and a whole host of damsels in distress. Ragna is from noble blood and finds herself in the community after she is married to one of the rich men. The novel follows the stories of three main characters and how their lives cross, and there’s a slew of other characters in England from 997 CE to 1007. I still have yet to read the third book in the trilogy and reading the prequel has made me want to read it for sure. That all changed after the Viking raid; they were forced to become farmers as opposed to the more loathsome option of slavery.

Or to put it another way, the central character of the Kingsbridge series is Kingsbridge, Follett’s fictional English town. Ragna: Daughter of Count Hubert of Cherbourg, travels to England to marry Ealdorman Wilwulf of Shiring. I haven’t read the third installment , A Column of Fire , but I assume it follows the same pattern: in pre-industrial England, characters from different classes—clergy, nobles, and peasants—go about their daily lives in ways that bring them into union and conflict. It’s tantalizing to be immersed in the world of what seems to be a common man and watch as the world (life) pommels his ambitions. All, including this one, can be read and enjoyed as standalones, since they are set in different centuries, with characters that are either descendants or ancestors.

Dreng throws the baby into the river despite the protests of Blod, Edgar, and both Dreng's own wives. From the bestselling author Ken Follett, The Evening and the Morning is a historical epic that ends where The Pillars of the Earth begins.
