This early script began immediately after Inferno, with a witch who survived the destruction of Mater Tenebrarum's home watching a detective ( Ennio Fantastichini) investigating a series of murders at a university. In this version, it is revealed in the climax that Markos is a fraud and Susie Bannion ( Dakota Johnson) is the real Mater Suspiriorum. When released in 1977, the first film, Suspiria, introduced the major stylistic elements of the series, including the bold use of primary colors and elaborate setpieces for each murder. It's music isn't bad, with the Gregorian style chanting, the the photography in and around Rome is no less acceptable than for "Angels and Demons".

The attribute of each woman (tears, sighs, shadows/darkness) is a direct translation of her name from Latin ("mater" being the Latin word for "mother"). The story of the Three Mothers opens at the beginning of the 11th century, when the origin of witchcraft is depicted as three sisters on the coast of the black sea. After all this successfully provocative imagery, Sarah's defeat of Mother Lachimarum is abruptly lame and anticlimactic. On 29 November 2003, at the Trieste Science Plus Fiction Festival in Northern Italy, Argento revealed that he hoped to start filming The Third Mother in August 2004 and was currently working on the script. Big Bad: Mater Lachrymarum is the titular Mother of Tears, the one responsible for all of the chaos in Rome, and plans to spread that chaos across the world. The film begins in Rome, where some workers at a graveyard stumble across a mysterious coffin with a box covered in occult symbols chained to it. As long as you don’t expect it to be “high art” and are familiar with more Dario Argento films than just “Suspiria”, then you’ll probably enjoy this one.

However, the gore is deliciously over-the-top from the beginning, including images of flesh-tearing torture, smashing heads (repeatedly and to gut-oozing malformation), BDSM, blood-spewing gashes, dismemberment, eye-gauging, disembowelment, gushy cannibalism, wading through a pit of partially liquefied human offal and being strangled by one's own intestines. In his earlier films Suspiria and Inferno this world is more or less confined to the houses of the witches but in Mother of Tears it extends to the whole city of Rome bringing with it sporadic violence and chaos. Much of which can be seen in some of his other later works such as Jennifer, Pelts, or even The Stendhal Syndrome. The Cannes Film Festival requested that The Third Mother be ready in time for consideration as a 2007 competition contender. Several black-and-white photographs of the filming were published on 19 January 2007 in the book Dario Argento et le cinéma by Bernard Joisten.

The Three Mothers (Italian: Le Tre madri) is a trilogy of supernatural horror films by Italian filmmaker Dario Argento. De Witt gives Sarah a copy of "The Three Mothers" to read, enabling her to find Mater Lachrymarum's lair.
