As a true guardian of the place, she learns from creosote, the mother of all plants, how to enhance the lives of generations beyond her lifetime. Joanna lives on the edge of the woods and village near the shores of the Salish Sea in Washington state.

For some of us, creativity flows in the kitchen, in the garden, with creative welding, and many other hobbies. Each card entry identifies the corresponding herb or plant life for the tarot key, its botanical nomenclature, and then easy-to-read accessible-to-all reference text about that herb. It also includes some crafting ideas for each herb, which is a nice bonus way of working with this deck.Bay is planted for Yule, parsley for Candlemas, violet for Ostara, chives for Beltane, lemon verbena for Summer Solstice, basil for Lammas, sage for Autumn Equinox, and onion for Hallows.

During the pandemic, she's been studying herbology and botany; she's always loved tarot and gifted me with a couple of my favorite decks. The box is one of my favorite kinds, a rigid two piece box sized to fit the deck and guidebook perfectly. One of the most exciting new Tarot decks that I’ve seen in some time is the Herbcrafter’s Tarot, with art work by Joanna Powell Colbert and a wonderful book by Latisha Guthrie. The Herbcrafter’s Tarot is the creation of Joanna Powell Colbert ( creator of the Gaian Tarot) and Latisha Guthrie.

The matching of the plants to the Tarot cards is very well thought out and doesn't seem arbitrary (as it can sometimes do in decks where crystals or something are "matched" to form a Tarot deck. With the spirit of her foremothers behind her, she vows to respect the people and medicine of her home. These are certainly not the only plant-themed tarot decks out there and I'm planning on a second part to this post where I also include a few of my favorite oracle decks (in which there are many, many more of them when compared to tarot decks). Sometimes herbal decks can feel more like flashcards than living oracles, but The Witches' Wisdom Tarot avoids this with Barlow's paintings which reflect her own love and connection with plant and animal life.

This is the first time pulling this card, and what a fitting one for this time of year (well, for us in the Northern Hem). When she’s not writing, you can find her mixing potions, foraging for snacks on her family homestead, and re-learning geometry with her homeschooled kiddos. Drawing inspiration from the shared Celtic heritage of the authors as well as from Latisha’s Mexican-American heritage, The Herbcrafter’s Tarot is a sister deck in many ways to The Gaian Tarot. This High Priestess card tells us to focus on our dreams, intuition, and genetic memory – all things that are easily pushed to the wayside in day-to-day life. On every page they recommend ways you can craft with the plant on the card and sometimes this includes suggestions like “make infused honey” or “create a tincture” but it obviously doesn’t list a recipe.
