As they are coming to terms with this bizarre situation, they hear a huge cephalopod has been found on Yellowcraig Beach. All three are drawn to it, as they are to each other. Lennox calls the creature "Sandy", but it's not a single entity, more part of a hive mind - when he touches Sandy, he finds out they are telepathic. They want to reconnect, they tell Lennox - with themselves. I do feel like the ending was quite predictable, I could guess most parts of the ending. I also felt like I couldn't really connect to the characters. And that's the main reason I give the book 3 stars. I think it didn't make me FEEL enough. Lennox is a troubled teenager with no family. Ava is eight months pregnant and fleeing her abusive husband. Heather is a grieving mother and cancer sufferer. They don’ t know each other, but when a meteor streaks over Edinburgh, all three suffer instant, catastrophic strokes... A sci-fi novel that is as moving as it is magical and mysterious. Doug Johnstone has hit it out of the park again’ Mark Billingham

an unlikely trio experience identical strokes when an octopus washes up on the shore. lennox, a boy from a group home who is bullied, ava, a pregnant woman with an abusive husband, and heather, an older woman with terminal brain cancer, are all outside at the same time when they see a bright light and have strokes. they all three miraculously recover, and are bound together to save the creature on the beach. A clever and unusual read ... I was on a journey with these characters, and completely transfixed' Susi HollidayHigh stakes, high adrenaline and somehow so gentle and moving. This is one of the most beautiful, extraordinary books I’ve ever read’ I absolutely LOVED this book (I had to write it in capitals). I felt the storyline was fresh and exciting. Even if you are not a science fiction aficionado, you will enjoy this book. I highly recommend you give it a try.

Was Johnstone sending a veiled political message? Well, maybe not. But I think I would happily exchange some of our own political representatives for those with the hearts and souls of our protagonists. All the drive, curiosity and wonder of his crime and mystery novels ... science fiction gains a new author' Derek B Miller When news reaches them of an octopus-like creature washed up on the shore near where the meteor came to earth, Lennox senses that some extra-terrestrial force is at play. With the help of Ava, Heather and a journalist, Ewan, he rescues the creature they call ‘Sandy’ and goes on the run.Not only do the trio save Sandy but he also saves them. In connecting with each other, examining their lives and each finding a way forward. I guess it’s easier to see your problems as small when the wealth of the universe has opened up for you. Ewan is a journalist who is following the story as it unfolds. However, whether he likes it or not, he gets entangled with Lennox, Ava, and Heather, and he ends up helping them in their quest.
